The Neue Nationalgalerie Website - Through Mies van der Rohe's Eyes

client: Neue Nationalgalerie

introduction

Embracing minimalism and elegance

In the spirit of the simple elegance and minimalism pioneered by Mies van der Rohe, we created a web application that pays homage to the visionary architect and reconnects visitors to the history of the Neue Nationalgalerie, acting as a bridge between the past and the present.

Respecting the spirit of Mies

The navigation through the website uses a reference to the famous Mies collages. Contemporary videos and images were turned into collages with clickable elements. This allows for a simple and intuitive way of navigating the references within the site.

Adaptive design

One of the main challenges of the project was to adapt a very stylised design that included video elements to the different screen formats. After some iterations and testing we found a simple design that was both intuitive and beautiful.

Enabling storytelling

In order to enable the curators and experts to insert their knowledge and stories, we created a CMS with twelve different sections, that would format the content automatically to fit the high quality visual style.
